So, you don't really know anything about her. She doesn't make many appearances during the game, but is often somehow related to the conversations of the main characters. You might not even like her from the few scenes she does appear in (which, of course, leads me into wondering what are you doing here...?). Why is she in the game in the first place?

Well, as you might know, the game revolves around time (of course there's the love story/ies, too). Wars are fought in different times. Sorceresses from the past, present and future battle and whole humanity is at stake and blah blah blah...you know this. Ellone is the main characters' link to the past and future. She gives them a better understanding towards the Sorceress Wars (past) and is needed for Ultimecia (from future) to achieve time compression. Truth to be told, the whole plot of FF8 wouldn't exist without her.

In disc 1 there would be no Edea to fight, if Ultimecia didn't possess her. If Edea didn't know Ellone, Ultimecia wouldn't need to possess her, but someone else, who Ellone knew. If Ellone didn't exist, Ultimecia wouldn't need to possess anyone to achieve time compression. There would be no need for SeeD and no final boss.... Squall wouldn't learn about Laguna, couldn't save Rinoa... (probably would be a lot happier with no sis to leave him...) Do you see where I'm going with this?

Ellone's role counted in dialogue is incredibly small considering her importance to the game. I guess that was the original intention. Keep her mysterious, so that the storyline wouldn't be so easy to grasp...but I still wish she would have gotten more screentime...
