color symbolism
Colors are one of the most important ways designers communicate through to their viewers, even though the meanings vary from culture to culture. The following meanings are mostly from this site:
We all know that Ellone wears light blue throughout her life. As a child she has a blue dress, and as an adult she weards a blue shirt. Blue represents a LOT of things, all varying from culture to culture. There are a couple of reoccurences in the color, though.
Most often it reflects water, which seems to be a theme with Squall's little family. Squall, Raine, Laguna, and now Ellone wears something often related to water? Blue is also a very calm color, which is what Ellone seems to radiate - calmness. She seems stable, loyal, peaceful, pure, and is somewhat of a security blanket for young Squall. All of these attributes are connected with the color blue. On the other side, so are coldness and depression. Some inner turmoil, perhaps?
The next thing that stands out is her off-white skirt, which has much calming meanings. White is usually thought of as a sacred and pure color, while the slight brown tint (that would make the skirt beige) gives it an earthy feel. Earthy colors reflect comfort and endurance. This would mean that Ellone was a pure person who offers/is comfort and does not easily give up. Sound like her? I think so.
Next we get to her green scarf of sorts. Green is a color of the nature just like brown, but it also represents youth, good luck, energy and even jealousy. Green is probably to make sure that she doesn't dress too much like a retiring auntie (too late), something that shows that Ellone is still young and has the energy to go on. Now, I don't think she has a jealous bone in her body...and her luck in life seems to be either good or bad depending on how you look at it. Parents died - bad. Find Laguna because of this - good. Laguna leaves, Raine dies, to orphanage - bad. Find friends in orphanage who eventually save her life - good. It's an ever-changing thing for her.
Now, finally. Yellow. Where does she have yellow, you ask? Her shoes, I answer. Yellow is a very vibrant color, and you usually do not associate bad feelings with it. But surprisingly, there are more bad signs associated with yellow than good. While yellow is a color of joy, it also represents illness, dishonesty, cowardice, and deceit. The fact that she has her feet in such a color makes me think. If they were brown (there is a little of that too), I would think she has her feet on the ground, and is a down-to-earth person. But yellow, after reading all this? One can only speculate....
